Hello there! I am a harpist from Halifax and I will be in Victoria from July 21st to August 8th. I am looking for a lever harp to rent during that time for some performances and recording. Do you have any suggestions for me of who might have a harp available? In 1973 she won first prize at the Fifth International Harp Competition in Israel, one of the most prestigious international harp competitions in the world. Since 1999 she has been the Principal Harpist of the New York Philharmonic, playing under music director and conductor Lorin Maazel, and in her 20-year teaching career has trained many successful students as well as serving concurrently as head of the harp departments at the Juilliard School (where she received her bachelor's and master's degrees) and Aspen Music Festival and School. She was formerly the head of the harp department at the Yale School of Music. Her own teachers included Pearl Chertok, Lily Laskine, Marcel Grandjany, and her predecessor at Juilliard, Susann McDonald.

Sharlene Wallace agreed to be the coach/advisor! This was not a competition; it's a friendly, constructive environment designed to help people along in their harp journey. Each student had15 minutes total to play a short piece, or part of a piece, and receive coaching. Then, a month later we did it all again to check on the progress!

Because of limited space, we only accepted one or two students from each teacher's studio as space allowed.

Registrants will participate in a live on-line two-hour class each morning with their instructor and their harp, there will be one "special topics" session each day with one of the instructors (mostly a listening class), and then a short concert every evening at 5 pm featuring an instructor, with a couple of ceilidh style student performances to begin. We'll try to be our usual informal, supportive style retreat, and try to meet needs of all our participants as best we can.

The hours have been adjusted for ease in long stretches at a screen, and for those participating outside of our Wells time zone. The classes will be 2 hours, with a 1/2 break in the middle - where coffee and talking will reign - there should be few enough students in each that we can somewhat chat with each other - we know that so much of the pleasure of coming to Wells is meeting your old harp friends every year!

Sharlene Wallace, Sunita Stanislow, and Seumas Gagne will each teach, somewhat in accordance with the plans made for in-person morning classes. They will be 2 hours instead of 3, however they will be for the full 5 days.

We'll all join together for the special topics in the afternoon, and for the concerts.

I'm happy to say that Tristan Le Govic will be playing one of the instructor concert nights, and possible have a special topic as well.

As you can appreciate, we're working through all the details on the fly.

All the classes will be done by Zoom, and registrants will get the info they need well in advance.

Registration will be up soon on the IMA website - I'll be sure and let you know when it is open!
West Coast Harp Societytag:www.westcoastharpsociety.org,2005:Post/63280282020-05-23T16:10:24-07:002020-05-24T23:26:56-07:00Supporting artists~
We all know how many bazillion concerts have been cancelled and what a financial blow that is to those who make most of their living that way. We received a nice note from Lesley Hartford this week, which we're posting for all about a way to support Alexander (Sasha) Boldachev.

I have subscribed to be a patron of Alexander as he clearly is struggling for some income right now. He is on Patreon. At the moment he only has 15 patrons...I wondered if you could put on the west coast society website. He is actually quite attentive and will answer questions if you send him any( I was amazed!). Incredibly expensive for lessons, but can be a patron for 5/20/50 $ US per month.
Thanks!

It is a great idea - and we;re encouraging all to look at supporting Sasha and anyone else that you can manage!

Lesley has furthere added that he does video chats with his patrons - once coming up this week. How cool is that to support your favourite artists, and be connected when we can't hear them play in concert.

You can search for him on Patreon and the basic cost is $5 per month!

Harp Column magazine had a good article on this. https://harpcolumn.com/blog/theres-an-app-for-that/ but you need a subscription to read it.

Here's another good page to peruse for ideas: https://blog.landr.com/best-ear-training-apps/

Elizabeth kept some good notes - if anyone else wants to add their own - let me know - use the contact form. Here's what she says:

--------------------------------------

Here are notes which I copied from Madison's notes, and added a bit to myself.

Here's a little review:

After Sivan Magen's master class, he treated us to an amazing concert. Sivan demonstrated his superb technique, dazzling pedal work and musicianship with a selection of beautiful music, some written for the harp, and some transcriptions. Everything was marvellous, but my favourite was his theatrical and thrilling rendition of Henriette Renié's Ballade Fantastique after Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. After three curtain calls and a standing ovation, he gave us a brilliant encore of a Chopin Mazurka, even after his very long weekend of performing and teaching!

We are all inspired.

Madison Dartana's notes from Sivan Magen's master class

January 19, 2019

UBC Barnett Recital Hall

-direction of strings- 2,3,4 pulls strings towards you, thumb pulls towards the column - this means that the thumb plays most strongly in a downward figure, while the 4th finger plays most strongly in an upward pattern - you must compensate for this in your phrasing and fingerings

-don't pull fingers outwards - they come flat into the palm

-relax fingers and shoulders - everything is free, only concentrate on fingers

-understand melody and hierarchy of importance in hands

-oscillate your hand when alternating between thumb and 2,3,4

-change orientation of hand to get more distance to articulate

-replace thumb by falling onto he string and place high

-movement of thumb comes from entire set of joints, not only top knuckle

-focus on the details to master techniques

-1 1/2 hours of simple technical exercises before working on repertoire - for mastering technique (evenness of sound, perfect articulation)

-letting go and being free, create space between thumb and 2nd finger

-sing the melody to understand the harmonies and phrasing-

-sing one line while playing the other (first sing the bass line, playing the treble, then sing treble, playing bass)

-evenness of sound and tempo is essential

-when playing 4-note chords, you must hear all the notes - listen for the middle notes

- thumb may go lower in relation to other fingers when you have a large space, such as a chord spanning an octave or more. Most important thing is to keep the sound even by having all the fingers and thumb close to the same plane on the strings.

-prepare long arpeggios/rolled chords by distributing weight among the fingers before plucking

-sound from chords comes from the wrist, not the arm

-"collect" the fingers

-work from your ear - listen very carefully to everything you do and practise slowly enough to notice every detail

-listen for connection between right and left hand

-practise the arpeggios as solid chords, then slowly broken, then with dotted rhythm, then the left hand arpeggio leading only to the first note of the right hand arpeggio, then groups of three, five, seven.

-practise until it sounds great, not just okay

-understand chord analysis to learn/memorize music

-say pedal changes rhythmically when you play/say notes/fingering

-keep your feet in a place that makes it easy to get to the next pedals - anticipate where they have to go - always have them within close range, never tucked underneath you.

-the music is created by creating tension, then release

-play everything like you are singing it

-create the line by using fingerings that make sense

-don't rely on "automatic pilot". Master the music, both in the muscles and the brain. Know exactly what each hand is doing.

-Understand how music is organized. Nerves come from not having a clear head. Being able to sing/verbalize pedals, notes, fingers, melodies, harmonies - then you can dig yourself out of a hole.

-after working on heavily-marked music, return to a clean score to make sure you can see all the dynamics and other details that may have gotten obliterated.

-know when to accent and when to play heavily, follow phrasing with time signature

-muffling happens at the beginning of the next note, when you're trying to clean up the line and prevent buzzing. Don't shorten the previous note unless indicated to be played that way.

-If you think beautifully and in character, you will play that way.

-strong beats should come out that way - be careful not to accent the wrong beats, especially when using a strong finger on a weak beat

-isolate sections and make them into exercises - this will iron out problems and make it easier to memorize pieces

Here are a few notes that I made about his comments with a couple of students:

He says lots about the direction of the string movement, keeping the string in the plane of the strings

Let go of any part of the hand or finger or arm that isn't playing

Always go back to the fundamentals at whatever level you're at

Work on simple etudes at the same times as more complicated music so you're always working on basic techniques. Bring them to a really good level, and then go to another one.

Singing one part while playing the other so that each are very clear to year.

Arpeggios - work in solids, then long and short - work on the connecting between the hands. Work in groups of 3, then 4, then 5

Practice more with the ears and head than the fingers

"That was probably one of the best harp concerts that I've ever been to. Sasha is pure genius. What an amazing player! Not only does he have a built-in genius for the harp, but you can tell he has put in thousands of hours of hard work. His playing is effortless and so virtuosic as to make you want to fall off your chair in amazement! His arrangements of pieces where the harp 'becomes the whole orchestra' are astounding (i.e. Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers). Everything is by memory. He has millions and millions of notes in his head -- and all in the right order! And he practices in the dark! Sasha is also one of those rare musicians who have total command of both the classical and non-classical world. Sasha is opening new doors in the harp world -- and what we see through those doors is fantastic. I hope he comes back to North America soon!"

She performed the first Canadian solo Konghou concert Saturday night to a receptive and amazed audience. A newish invention, the Konghou is a blend of the modern pedal harp and the guzheng, and takes its name form the ancient harp which was similar to the chang (ceng).

The pieces were mostly chinese compositions, some traditional and some new, and feautured all the hallmarks pf the Konghou - bending notes, using a pick at times, and the throughout a emotional and evocative picture of the Silk Road. Rosanna Chiu joined her for the last piece in a beautiful Konghou and pedal harp duet. Brava to both!!

West Coast Harp Societytag:www.westcoastharpsociety.org,2005:Post/45117512016-12-14T20:55:00-08:002016-12-14T20:55:00-08:00What is this website for???Often we've had an idea to sponsor a concert or a workshop and we've struggled to get the news out. Or a local harper has a concert with a disappointing turn-out. Someone has a harp for sale, and someone else is looking for one, and they never connect. These are all problems we've encountered in recent years, and this is our attempt to help the situations above.

You'll find listings of local teachers and performers, harp events, and more. The website will be as useful as we jointly make it. The newsletter will go out alerting people to additions in concerts, or items for sale, or workshops coming up. Let's connect the harping community on the West Coast. I feel there are more of us than we think. Please add your name to the mailing list, (and you can cancel if we write boring news) and let's see how many we are!West Coast Harp Society
